Archie Comics is Finally Headed to the Big Screen, and It'll Come with Zombies

Whether you read comics or not, everybody has heard of Archie Comics. We all know of his loyal, hamburger devouring buddy Jughead, his idyllic hometown of Riverdale, and of his ability to hop between girlfriends Betty and Veronica seemingly at will. Lucky bastich. The series has been running strong for more than 70 years, and yet it's never been brought to the silver screen before. Warner Bros. is planning on changing that very soon, and they'll try to make it current by throwing in a few of the undead to terrorize them.

Pitch Perfect director Jason Moore is set to direct Afterlife with Archie, with Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Carrie) adapting his own comic book. The story is said to combine the quintessential Archie Comics elements with the undead by having the Riverdale gang battling zombies. Archie generally is associated with a more innocent time, which is why some will probably balk at the idea of it being part of the current zombie craze. But this is hardly the first time someone has attempted to bring Archie into a completely unfamiliar, violent situation. One of my favorite comics to thumb through the Archie Meets the Punisher crossover, in which the Marvel anti-hero attempts to fill Archie full of lead.

It's also not the first time Archie has been turned into a movie. In 1990 a forgettable live-action TV film titled Archie: To Riverdale and Back Again was released.
