Denzel Washington is 'Shovel Ready'; Rick McCallum to produce 'R'Ha'; 'Community' stars join 'Hot Tub Time Machine 2'

* Denzel Washington is wading back into Man on Fire territory in Warner Bros. upcoming sci-fi project,  Shovel Ready. Based on journalist Adam Sternbergh's upcoming novel, the story takes place in an apocalyptic New York City where most of the people escape reality by tapping into a digital virtual reality world. Washington would play a contract killer hired to take out a little girl, but ultimately becomes her protector. I'm sure his heart will be sufficiently warmed by the time the final credits roll. This one's still very early on, but already it sounds like Man on Fire, The Book of Eli, and The Equalizer all rolled into one. [Deadline]

* Famed Star Wars producer Rick McCallum is taking on another sci-fi project, his first since departing Lucasfilm. He'll produce R'Ha, based on the short film by Kalem Lechowski who will also direct based on a script by Matthew Graham. The story follows an alien race known as the R'Ha who defend other star systems from attack. [THR]

* John Cusack may be out of Steve Pink's Hot Tub Time Machine 2, but the rest of the cast has decided to return. And another who is set to come back for another go 'round is Chevy Chase, back as the all-knowing tub repairman. He'll be joined by his Community co-star Gillian Jacobs, who has signed on to play the female lead. That should make for some interesting lunch conversation, considering how Chase publicly walked off the show during the fourth season. Adam Scott, Craig Robinson, Clark Duke, and Rob Corddry will star in the comedy sequel when it opens next year.
