New Trailer for Neill Blomkamp's 'Elysium' Starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster

Franchises pretty much have a stranglehold over the summer season, and that's not likely to change with Marvel and Disney throwing money around everywhere. Fortunately, we're seeing a few homegrown tentpoles spring up from major creators. Guillermo Del Toro's Pacific Rim is one that many expect to be a smash, and then there's Neill Blomkamp's Elysium, which doesn't have giant robots but does have Matt Damon in a power suit.

A new trailer for Elysium has been released and it showcases Blomkamp and Damon's relative strengths. The director's gift for building real, fully realized worlds is on display, while Damon exudes the intensity of Jason Bourne coupled with a touch of humor. Set in the year 2159 when the wealthy live on an idyllic space station called Elysium while the poor suffer on Earth, Damon plays a cancer-stricken man who must get to the station and cure his terminal disease. Jodie Foster is the government bureaucrat standing in his way, while Sharlto Copley is her ruthless attack dog.

Elysium hits theaters on August 9th.
