Nicolas Cage Hunts John Cusack In the New Trailer for 'The Frozen Ground'

When Nicolas Cage and John Cusack were first announced for The Frozen Ground, a film which is based on the real life case of serial killer Robert Hansen, the natural assumption was that Cage would play the killer and Cusack the detective trying to bring him down. But that's not the case, and Cusack gets to play his second nutball in a calendar year, following his disturbing turn in The Paperboy. It had been awhile since we'd seen anything from the film until a few days ago when a new poster was released, and now we're getting a more substantial look as the trailer has arrived.

Giving a perky introduction to the footage is Vanessa Hudgens, co-starring as a prostitute who managed to escape Hansen's clutches and provide detective Jack Holcombe with his first clues to find the killer. Of course, his fellow boys in blue don't want to help, since Hansen is one of Alaska's more upstanding citizens, so Holcombe is forced to take matters into his own hands. The trailer doesn't give away much, and it's hard to tell if that's due to a desire to maintain a level of mystery or if it's because there isn't much story there to reveal. It's certainly better than the version we received last summer, but that's not saying a whole lot. Scott Walker makes his directorial debut, and the supporting cast includes Radha Mitchell, Dean Norris, Jodi Lyn O'Keefe, and 50 Cent as the awesomely-named Pimp Clate Johnson. I want a Pimp Clate spinoff now.

The Frozen Ground gets a VOD and limited theatrical release beginning August 23rd.
