James Cameron Plans 'Battle Angel' for 2017

With his Avatar franchise hauling in a record-breaking $2.8B worldwide, it's no wonder that James Cameron   is putting all of his energy into writing the back-to-back sequels he may be filming as soon as this year. While we still don't know exactly when those will hit theaters, possibly in 2015 or 2016, Cameron's plans beyond that still include an adaptation of the hit manga, Battle Angel.

While in Mexico City for the TagDF technology forum, Cameron revealed (via TheFilmStage) that he will begin development on Battle Angel in 2017. This fits into what he and producer Jon Landau were saying last fall when Cameron confirmed his continued interest in the project, after it seemed for a time that he would hand it off to another director. So this would likely be his next film after Avatars 2 & 3, and we may see it in theaters by 2019.

Battle Angel encompasses many of the same themes Cameron has been exploring in Avatar and even to a lesser extent, the Terminator films, the idea of what it means to be human. The story is based on Yukito Kishiro's manga about a female cyborg discovered in the trash by an engineer, who is rebuilt into a bounty hunter while trying to learn about her past.

Cameron and Alfonso Cuaron had more to say on 3D technology and working together on the latter's sci-fi film, Gravity. You can check out a little bit of the conversation below...
