Marc Webb Talks 'Spider-Man 2' Villains; Shailene Woodley on Mary Jane Role

It seems like there is a new major character revealed for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 every week, to the point where overcrowding the story is a real concern. But it sounds like Marc Webb has an idea on how to handle it, and the plan seems to be that many of the villains will have a tiny presence for now, but a much larger one later. Talking to MTV, Webb says that Jamie Foxx's Electro is the main heel to look out for....

Webb: "I'll tell you that the main villain in this movie is Electro. These movies are sort of on-going, and there are hints and teases of what's going to unfold in the future, but we were very focused on that simple conflict between Spider-Man and Electro. Electro is, to me, a really captivating and interesting villain because at this point, Spider-Man is really good at being Spider-Man. There is a level of virtuosity that is really fun to make and really fun to watch. Those abilities need to be challenged."

So it sounds like Paul Giamatti's Rhino will mostly be held for Spidey 3, or possibly Spidey 4 when some expect to see the Sinister Six form. Webb makes it sound as if something major could happen in the film, which even he was a little surprised Sony moved forward on so quickly....

Webb: "The fourth one was a little bit of a surprise," Webb admitted. "We always talked about there being a set of three movies, but there may be elements that expand outside Spider-Man that could fulfill that fourth film."

And remember that whole thing with Shailene Woodley's role as Mary Jane Watson being cut from the sequel? She's cool with it, and her reasons for it sound completely reasonable. She tells Movies.com...

Woodley: "Mary Jane was in four scenes – four scenes in the whole film, and it didn’t make sense. They’re introducing so many new characters; it really didn’t make sense to introduce such a vital character to the comic books in a movie that had so much else going on, so they’re holding off for future films.”

She went on to say that there's no screenplay for the third film yet, so there's no way to know if she'll have the time in her schedule to return. She has the Divergent franchise occupying her time now, and judging by the reaction from the Comic-Con panel, it's going to be huge.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens on May 2nd 2014.
