First Trailer and Poster for Beltway Sniper Drama 'Blue Caprice'
Those who were in Washington D.C. back in 2002 no doubt still quiver at the thought of the beltway sniper attacks. For nearly the entire month of October, trained sniper John Allen Muhammad and his mysterious young confidant Lee Boyd Malvo terrorized the city, killing people seemingly at random and slinking off into the night never to be seen. The country was still barely a year removed from the 9/11 attacks, and this only added to our collective fear. The story of the attacks has been told in various forms over the years, mostly from the perspective of the cops on Muhammad's trail, but Alexandre Moors' debut film Blue Caprice dares to take us inside the mind of the killer.
The first trailer and poster for Blue Caprice has hit, and it's sure to cause no end of controversy. Isaiah Washington plays Muhammad, a loner whose anger at the world led him to lash out violently against it. He would also find a willing partner in Malvo (Tequan Richmond), a quiet young man who Muhammad could mold into a monster. If there's a takeaway from the footage it's that Moors isn't looking to sensationalize the killings, instead presenting a character piece that seeks to understand Muhammad's actions. The balance comes in not going so far that it turns into rationalizing what he did, an issue I addressed with Moors and Washington in my interview with them at Sundance.
Blue Caprice opens on September 13th and hits On Demand four days later. Check out the trailer below, then my review of the film here.
