Rupert Sanders to Direct Live-Action 'Ghost in the Shell'

Turning Japan's most cherished manga into live-action features has been a problem Hollywood continues to struggle with. The problems Warner Bros. faced with Akira are legendary at this point, and aren't likely to be resolved any time soon. Years ago Dreamworks began developing a live-action take on Masamune Shirow's classic Ghost in the Shell, with a script to be written by Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island). Then nothing ever happened and there wasn't any word on it until now, as the project appears to be back on with Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) directing.

Deadline reports that Sanders will direct the film in 3D, with William Wheeler providing a new script. The original 1989 cyberpunk manga was adapted into an anime movie in 1995, directed by Momoru Oshii. It was followed by a sequel and an anime series, Stand Alone Complex. Set in the not-too-distant future, the story centers on Major Motoko Musanagi, a cyborg member of a special unit designed to take down a cyber-criminal known as the "Puppet Master".

It's unclear where this would fit into Sanders' schedule as he has a number of projects in the works including Napoleon, 90 Church, and The Kill List. Considering how long Dreamworks has been trying to get moving on Ghost in the Shell they may want Sanders to make it a priority.
