Actor/Director Philip Seymour Hoffman Dead at 46

Very sad news as actor and director Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead today in his New York City apartment, of what is being described as a drug overdose. He was 46 years old. He had been struggling with drug and alcohol problems since college but had been sober for more than two decades until checking himself into a rehab facility last May.

Hoffman had grown to become one of today's most respected actors, and has been a personal favorite of mine for a very long time. After beginning his career in 1991 with an episode of Law & Order, he went on to land small roles in Scent of a Woman, Nobody's Fool, and others, but it was when he hooked up with Paul Thomas Anderson that his career took off. He would go on to star in Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love, and The Master for the director, establishing himself as a powerful force in front of the camera. In 2010 he made the move to directing with his debut, Jack Goes Boating, and was developing his follow-up Ezekiel Moss at the time of his passing. A commanding presence on the screen and stage, he would go on to win Best Actor in 2005 for his performance in Capote, and received three Tony-award nominations for his theater work, including most recently in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman. Hoffman was just recently at the Sundance Film Festival to promote two his most recent films, A Most Wanted Man and God's Pocket.
