Is Marvel Eying Mads Mikkelsen for a 'Doctor Strange' Role?
Now that it's all but a certainty that Marvel is prepping Doctor Strange to be a part of Phase Three, with a handful of directors already being queued up, it's time to start talking about who could play the good doctor. While some dusty old rumors once had Johnny Depp and Joseph Gordon-Levitt rumored for the part (and Patrick Dempsey back when he was hot), Bleeding Cool has heard Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen could be in the picture.
According to Bleeding Cool's source, the reason why Nikolaj Arcel was on the list of directorial candidates could have something to do with Mikkelsen, who starred in his Oscar-nominated drama, A Royal Affair. They say Mikkelsen "apparently is, or has been, somewhere in the mix for the film’s early casting discussions", and if I know anything about Brendon Connelly he wouldn't report this without feeling confident. That doesn't mean Mikkelsen has the role, just that he's factoring into the equation somehow, maybe as someone the studio is considering.
It's not as if Disney hasn't sought out Mikkelsen for a Marvel role before. He was briefly attached to play the villain Malekith in Thor: The Dark World before his Hannibal commitments got in the way. Maybe producers are circling back to someone they're already familiar with? And doesn't that suggest maybe they'd want him to be the bad guy in Doctor Strange? He'd make for a great Dormammu or Baron Mordo.
