Roger Ebert Documentary 'Life Itself' Headed to Theaters

In what can only be characterized as great news, Magnolia Pictures has picked up the theatrical, VOD, and home entertainment rights to Roger Ebert documentary, Life Itself, with plans of releasing it this summer. That will be followed by a broadcast on CNN, similar to the partnership they had on last year's hit documentary, Blackfish.

Directed by Steve James of Hoop Dreams notoriety, Life Itself is based on Ebert's memoir that goes through the many varied stages of his life and career. It begins with his work as an outspoken political reporter for his college newspaper, to his time as the film critic for the Chicago Sun Times, to finding the love of his life, and finally the latter years when cancer took away his ability to speak but couldn't silence his powerful voice.

One of the best movies I saw at Sundance this year, and the only one that had me bawling like a child, the film is especially poignant in its depiction of Ebert's contentious but brotherly relationship with 'At the Movies' co-host Gene Siskel.  For obvious reasons we can probably look at Life Itself as the early (and likely) favorite for Best Documentary Feature.
