Goonies Never Die! Richard Donner Says 'The Goonies' Sequel in the Works

Hey you guys!!! Rumors of a potential sequel, or worse a remake, of The Goonies have been making the rounds for year, with the only one confident it would happen being Sean Astin. In 2012 he told IGN in regards to a sequel, “I’m 1,000 percent certain there will be a sequel. I will bet my children on it.” Richard Donner, who directed the classic 1985 film, has been less enthusiastic, saying in 2010, “Steven (Spielberg) said something the other day to me that he and Chris (Columbus) were talking about and maybe something — but I don’t think there’d be a sequel. I wouldn’t remake it.

Well, something has changed Donner's mind if his recent comments to TMZ are to be believed. Asked whether a comic book movie might be in his future, Donner replied “If you call ‘Goonies’ a comic book. We’re doing a sequel.”  When asked about who might return, he replied "Hopefully all of them".

Many of the film's stars have grown up and moved on to much bigger things. Some, like Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Martha Plimpton, and Corey Feldman, have remained active (or somewhat active) in Hollywood, while others have dropped out of acting entirely. It would be interesting to see who actually comes back.

The kid in me is doing cartwheels at this news, but the realist in me hopes Donner is pulling our chains. There's really only one place a sequel could go, with the adult-aged Goonies fretting over their kids who are off having their own adventure. We saw this already in Super 8 just a few years ago and that was quite enough for me. And for the record, Donner isn't exactly in demand as a director anymore. He's directed two features in eleven years, and they were 16 Blocks and Timeline, both terrible for different reasons.

We'll see if any of this is true and we should start saving up our Baby Ruths.
