Javer Bardem to Headline Biopic on Famous WWII Double Agent

One of my favorite documentaries of the last few years was Garbo: The Spy, which chronicled the amazing true story of Joan Pujol Garcia, a WWII spy and double-agent working for the Allies against the Nazis. He was so convincing in his efforts that the German government awarded him the Iron Cross in 1944, even though he was actively working against them. He was also honored by the British government, making him one of the few to receive awards from both for his war efforts. The documentary was directed by Edmon Roch, a producer on Javier Bardem's Biutiful, and it's possible the two discussed Pujol's story on set, because the actor is now bringing it to the big screen.

According to The Tracking Board, Bardem is attached to lead a film based on Pujol's career as a double-agent. While no writer or director is attached at this time, it will be an adaptation of Stephen Talty's book, Agent Garbo: The Brilliant, Eccentric Secret Agent Who Tricked Hitler and Saved D-Day.

This won't be the first time movie on Pujol's life has been attempted, with one surfacing back in 2006 that never developed. Hopefully with a star like Bardem on board, this one will get the support it needs to start moving.
