Is Idris Elba's "mystery" role for Pacific Rim, not Django Unchained?

As far as I'm concerned, you can put Idris Elba pretty much in every big movie and I'll be happy. The Brit actor has truly worked his butt off, impressing people along the way and making his own big break into stardom. His ascension has been a joy to watch. So when he tweeted a few days ago that he was having the biggest meeting of his career, it turned a lot of heads. The meeting was with a "controversial" director, so the natural assumption was that it was with Quentin Tarantino and the film would be Django Unchained.  That may still be true, but apparently Elba's in contention for another film that could possibly be even bigger, and that's Guillermo Del Toro's monster epic,  Pacific Rim.

The Wrap broke the news, stating that Legendary Pictures is "interested" in him for a role, in which he'll star opposite Charlie Hunnam(Green Street Hooligans). Other actors have been mentioned for the film as well, including Tom Cruse who was supposed to be working with Del Toro on At the Mountains of Madness before that film got squashed. Pacific Rim tells the story of how humans come together, using big futuristic weapons and mechs to combat an alien invasion.

But is this the film Elba was referring to last week? It's possible, but Del Toro isn't really controversial to most people. He's had his run-ins lately over The Hobbit(which he was to direct) and At the Mountains of Madness, but only insiders and news folks care about that. I'm going to guess and say that this wasn't the movie he was referring to, but you never know. Here's hoping he gets both. Elba is currently filming Prometheus, Ridley Scott's big sci-fi film starring Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, and Charlize Theron.
