Fans of Edgar Wright have probably grown a little frustrated with him at this point, as the fan favorite director has become really good at keeping the progress of his upcoming films well hidden. It's been awhile since his Scott Pilgrim vs. the World bombed in theaters, and ever since then it's basically been three projects people have been keeping a close eye on. One was The Adventures of Tintin, which he served as a co-writer on and was released late last year. The other two are more murky: the Marvel comics adaptation of Ant-Man; and the long awaited third leg of the "Blood and Ice Cream" trilogy with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.
Those patiently waiting for an update on those last two hopefully aren't holding their breaths, as Wright has just taken on what will be his most high profile job to date. Last summer we learned of Johnny Depp's plan to produce and star in a big screen version of The Night Stalker, the cult favorite supernatural crime series from the 1970s. Deadline reports that Wright will take on directing duties on the film, with Depp taking on the Carl Kolchak role made famous by Darren McGavin in two television movies and the subsequent TV series.
While it's a little disheartening that Wright's other projects will likely be further delayed, being behind the camera for a successful Johnny Depp film can only help him in the future. Plus, at least we don't have to suffer through Depp teaming with Tim Burton or Gore Verbinski for the umpteenth time.
