Finding it hard to get excited over Wanderlust, the upcoming fish out of water comedy starring Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston? I don't really blame you, as the TV spots for it have been downright terrible, not focusing nearly enough on it's two extremely likable stars. Who wouldn't pay to see Paul Rudd in...well, anything? He almost made Our Idiot Brother funny, so he should be able to work wonders here, re-teaming with his Role Models and Wet Hot American Summer director, David Wain.
Despite it's R-rating, Wanderlust never struck me as a film that was really going to be all that raunchy. Now that a new red band trailer has been released, I totally agree with myself on that idea. Other than Justin Theroux's sexual double speak while milking a goat, and Rudd wanting to pounce on a willing Malin Akerman, this looks like a movie that plays it a little safe. Not totally unexpected, even if it is disappointing. Of more concern is that none of the jokes here are all that funny, despite the fantastic supporting cast which also includes Alan Alda, Lauren Ambrose, and co-writer Ken Marino.
It's hard to write off Rudd, Aniston, and Wain, so maybe my worries will prove unjustified. Check out the red band trailer for Wanderlust, due out on February 24th...
