The Sunday Drive: 2/19/12

3. Safe House
Denzel Washington is a diabolical CIA traitor running circles around Ryan Reynolds' untested agent in this energetic thriller from fast rising director, Daniel Espinosa!
2. The Secret World of Arrietty
There's a reason why the latest animated gem from Studio Ghibli is the best reviewed new film of the week. Co-written by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki, 'Arrietty' is a change of pace from the big, loud 'toons we're used to. Smaller in scale but full of grande ideas, it tells the story of a diminutive, eco-friendly race of Borrowers and the reluctant friendship struck with a lonely human boy.
1. Chronicle
Hey, it's been #1 for three weeks now, so if you haven't run out to see the film then it must be for a reason. Shove all thoughts of other superpowered teen flicks like Sky High and Zoom out of your mind. Chronicle is on a whole other level, presenting a realistic portrayal of what happens when emotional volatile teens get everything they could ever want before they're ready to handle it.

DVD Pick of the Week: Take Shelter
Is there any actor who does "haunted" and "brooding" better than Michael Shannon? The actor is perfect for Take Shelter, about a small town man who begins to have dark visions of a coming disaster. This makes him a pariah to his friends and colleagues, who think his family history of mental illness has finally caught up with him. Jessica Chastain provides a natural, grounded presence as Shannon's wife, who is torn between the trust she has for her husband, and that which she can(or can't) see right in front of her eyes.
