Trading Up: Zoe Kazan replaces Abigail Spencer in Joss Whedon-written romance, 'In Your Eyes'

Nothing against Abigail Spencer. She's a good actress and her addition to In Your Eyes, the metaphysical romance written by Joss Whedon, was a solid choice. Certainly it would've been a step up from her forgettable supporting turns in Cowboys & Aliens and this week's action comedy, This Means War. She's an actress on the move, though, as she's set to produce and star in Wrong Number, based on her own script.  With Spencer's schedule getting a little crowded, Zoe Kazan has taken over the In Your Eyes lead, and if you ask me it's a definite step up.

The granddaughter of Hollywood icon, Elia Kazan, Zoe has been forging a very distinct career for herself over the last decade. A star of both stage and screen, she's been featured in a number of Broadway production, as well as writing her own theater productions. Recently she appeared in Josh Radnor's directorial debut, happythankyoumoreplease, as well as alongside Michelle Williams in Meek's Cutoff. Her performance in The Exploding Girl remains one that continues to haunt me to this day, three years after I first saw it.

She'll be joined in the film by Michael Stahl-David(Cloverfield), who today came aboard the low budget indie. He'll play Dylan, an ex-con living in a trailer in New Mexcio. Kazan will be Rebecca, an awkward married woman living in Connecticut. Despite their distance and never having met, the two are connected by an unseen force, able to see and hear one another.

Brian Hill is set to direct, with filming to kick off next week in Los Angeles and New Hampshire. If it goes like Whedon's other small budget flick, Much Ado About Nothing, then it'll be shot in a matter of days and hopefully in theaters not long after.  [Deadline]
