Yesterday's reveal of the ho-hum poster for Allen Hughes' Broken City probably didn't convince anyone the film is more than just your typical Mark Wahlberg thriller, like Contraband. The January release couldn't have helped, either, although the combination of Wahlberg, Russell Crowe, and Catherine Zeta-Jones promises something more than average. So which one is it? Based on the newly released trailer I think Broken City could be something special.
I caught the trailer a few days ago at an early screening of Taken 2, and was immediately taken in by the gritty, film noir vibe backed by the powerful Kanye West soundtrack. Wahlberg plays an ex-cop thrown off the force after a major screw up, who gets hired by Russell Crowe's mayoral incumbent to investigate his wife's infidelity. What Wahlberg discovers is something far more sinister than anticipated, and that his own murky past is being used against him. The interplay between Crowe and Wahlberg is terrific, bearing some of the trademarks of old school gumshoe flicks. With a cast that includes Jeffrey Wright and Kyle Chandler, we know the performances will be great from the top down.
