'Miss Bala' director Gerardo Naranjo to helm 'Death Wish' remake

MGM and Paramount's Death Wish remake has just taken an interesting turn, weeks after Joe Carnahan departed the film over disagreements with the studio on casting a lead. Producers had been targeting Bruce Willis, despite coming off a lackluster return for his latest Die Hard film, while Carnahan had a role in mind for his The Grey co-star, Frank Grillo. While a decision on someone to take over the role made famous by Charles Bronson is still up in the air, Gerardo Naranjo is their choice to direct.

Hardly a household name by any means, Naranjo made a splash a couple of years ago with the Mexican drug trafficking film, Miss Bala. He's been pulling in offers ever since, landing the political thriller A Man Must Die, and The Mountains Between Us with Michael Fassbender.

Carnahan may be gone, but his script is still very much in play. The next step is to decide on a star, and Variety reports Brad Pitt and Will Smith have been approached, with the hopes of landing someone of their stature. No matter who Paramount and MGM decide on, it's clear they have big hopes for the film, and trusting Naranjo with it says a lot.
