'A Haunted House 2' in the works; WWE considering 'The Call' sequel
The early part of the year can be an unpredictable nightmare for Hollywood market analysts. The early months are typically where studios dump relatively inexpensive genre with hopes that maybe one will catch on and grab a strong opening weekend. This year has seen two films vaguely in the horror realm do bigger than anticipated business, and now their studios are coming back for more.
Marlon Wayans' horror spoof A Haunted House earned a surprising $50M+ against a puny $2.5M budget, and Open Road Films is looking to fast track a sequel for winter 2013-2014. Wayans and co-writer Rick Alvarez will be back, and presumably will most of the cast, which included Essence Atkins and Cedric the Entertainer. But is there at least some chance of spoof burn out, with Scary Movie 5 right around the corner? Paranormal Activity can only be mocked so many times, right? Look for production to being this summer.
WWE Studios scored its biggest hit ever with the Halle Berry-led thriller, The Call. Directed by Brad Anderson on a paltry $13M budget, the film has had long legs since it debuted last month, taking in roughly $45M in that time. Variety says the WWE is considering a follow-up, but it remains unclear what approach will be taken. Would they stick with the same premise, that of a 911 operator who attempts to keep a kidnap victim on the line, or try something a little different? It's possible they may try to lure Berry to return.
