Is this how Agent Coulson returns in 'Agents of SHIELD'?
Ever since it was announced that Clark Gregg would be back as Agent Coulson in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., fans have been speculating exactly how that was possible given the events of The Avengers. Theories have ranged from cloning to him being one of Nick Fury's' Life Model Decoys (basically lifelike robots), but those ideas seem like they would cheapen what was a very effective death. There was even a brief campaign to bring Coulson back as the android Vision.
The gang over at Slashfilm have received a tip that may give us the real answer about Coulson's return. It's a pretty big spoiler for the show, while also possibly tipping off a future plot point for future Marvel films, so don't read on if you're worried about something being spoiled.
Here ya go....
In the pilot, it’s revealed Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), the ultimate super spy, faked Agent Coulson’s death on purpose to motivate The Avengers. Some S.H.I.E.L.D. members were in on it (including, possibly, Maria Hill played by Cobie Smulders) but The Avengers were not. Their security clearance wasn’t high enough. Coulson was forced to hold his breath as part of the ruse and that’s a point of contention among his colleagues After the fact, Fury moved him to a remote location until things died down, and then he was reinserted into duty at the time of the show.
Ok, so if this is actually true, it'll take a lot of work on the part of Joss Whedon and Co. to make it plausible. It raises more questions than it answers, not the least of which is how Coulson was able to survive being stabbed in the chest by Loki. How could he and Fury have had the foresight to predict Loki's actions? It just doesn't make much sense. What's unclear is whether we're going to see the ramifications of Fury's lie in a future film, and if this forces the Avengers to look at Coulson in a different manner.
Personally, I think sounds like some bullsh*t. But what do you all think?
