Jennifer Garner lines up for 'Draft Day'
Last fall it was looking like the sports dramedy Draft Day was going to go undrafted after Paramount put it into turnaround, essentially dumping the film on the free agent market. But then the script by Scott Rothman and Rajiv Joseph turned up on the Black List of best unproduced screenplays, attracting the attention of Summit Entertainment and star Kevin Costner.
Variety reports that Jennifer Garner is in talks to join Costner in the film, which has been described as a football version of Moneyball. The story follows the general manager of the hapless Buffalo Bills as he spends the day doing sacrificing everything professional and personally to secure the #1 draft pick. Garner will play Costner's secretary, while Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters) will direct and serve as a producer.
The NFL had been considering whether to officially endorse the film, which would grant the ability to use real teams, logos, and probably shoot footage at the NFL Draft later this month. Otherwise they could be forced to create fictional teams, similar to films like Any Given Sunday and The Replacements. Garner will be seen next in The Dallas Buyers Club opposite Matthew McConaughey.
