Having established himself in extremely short order as an international star thanks to the comedy smash The Intouchables, Omar Sy is now making big moves into Hollywood. Already having wrapped up Michel Gondry's Mood Indigo, the actor just secured his first franchise film with a still-undisclosed role in X-men: Days of Future Past. Now he's moving from that into what appears to be another provocative thriller from Syriana director, Stephen Gaghan.
Sy has come aboard Candy Store, a film that explores the criminal underworld in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. Joining the previously announced Jason Clarke, the film follows a former covert agent who discovers the global crime organization he was dedicated to fighting is operating right in his backyard. He teams up with a disgraced local cop, with their investigation leading them to a Cold War consigliere, a beautiful girl wrapped up in a threat against Manhattan, and a king pimp played by Sy.
A number of big names have been circling the film, but there's no mention of Chris Hemsworth who became attached a few months ago. It's possible that Clarke stepped in to fill the same role. Gaghan, who also wrote the drug world drama Traffic, will again be interweaving multiple storylines to present a larger picture of the subject. With casting moving along at a decent clip, it's possible that filming could begin soon after Cannes, where it will go to complete financing.
