Robert De Niro and Michael Pena join David O. Russell's Abscam film
Even though David O. Russell's untitled next film boasts the talents of Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence, Louis C.K., Jeremy Renner, Jack Huston, Dawn Olivieri, Alessandro Nivola, and Elisabeth Rohm, there's apparently room to add a couple more big names. With filming underway, Russell has apparently reached out to yet another Silver Linings Playbook alum in Robert De Niro, plus reliable character actor Michael Pena.
Formerly titled American Bullshit, the film is based on the true story of the Abscam scandal, an FBI sting operation set up to root out public corruption. Bale plays a notorious con artist with Adams as his mistress/partner, who are forced to turn the tables on other con artists, mobsters, and politicians. Cooper plays the reckless federal agent they have to work with, while Renner is a popular New Jersey state assemblyman at the epicenter of the scandal. Pena's role is unclear, but The Boston Globe says De Niro will have a very small part in a scene at a casino.
Pena recently earned rave response for his performance in End of Watch, and was last seen in Gangster Squad. De Niro has been keeping busy with five films set to release in 2013. He'll appear next as part of the comedy ensemble, The Big Wedding. Russell's Abscam drama hits theaters on Christmas Day.
