Sure Shots: Brit Marling; James Franco; Jude Law

* Last fall Olivia Wilde came aboard Daniel Barber's Civil War drama, The Keeping Room, which would have seen her starring alongside Hailee Steinfeld and Nicole Beharie (42) in the story of two Southern sisters and a slave who must defend their home against a contingent of soldiers broken off from the Union army. For unknown reasons, although it's probably due to scheduling, Wilde has dropped out and has been replaced by Brit Marling. It's an odd switch as Wilde and Marling couldn't be more different, but it's definitely not a step down in the acting department. Marling can be seen right now in Robert Redford's The Company You Keep, and has eco-thriller The East due out next month. [The Wrap]

* There are two biopics on renowned traveler, writer, and political attaché Gertrude Bell in the works. One by Ridley Scott that seems to be going nowhere, and Werner Herzog's long-developing Queen of the Desert. He seemed to have a leg up with the powerhouse cast of Naomi Watts, Jude Law, and Robert Pattinson, but as production has gone nowhere in months, Law has had to drop out. James Franco is said to be circling the unspecified role now, as the need is to maintain the same level of starpower if the film is ever going to get off the ground. Considering Franco's unpredictable schedule, they may run into similar issues, so we'll just have to wait and see. [Deadline]

* Speaking of Jude Law, one of the projects that will be keeping him busy is Black Sea, a submarine thriller announced last year and directed by The Last King of Scotland helmer, Kevin Macdonald. Law plays a sea captain who is laid off by his salvage company, and is then hired by a shady backer to lead an expedition to find a sunken sub full of gold. He puts together a ragtag group to complete the task, but finds that trusting them grows tougher the closer they get to the gold. Look for this one to begin rolling in the next few weeks.
