Susanne Bier Directs 'Mary Queen of Scots'; Cassi Thomson is 'Left Behind'; Julie Delpy Pens 'Cancer Vixen'

* More than a year ago Saoirse Ronan became attached to star in Mary Queen of Scots, from Elizabeth and The Tudors scribe Michael Hirst. Nothing was heard about it and the project was presumed dead, but it's apparently still on as Susanne Bier (Love Is All You Need) has come on direct. Ronan would play Mary, who ascended to the throne at six years old, and whose life was full of betrayal and murder until she was executed after plotting to assassinated Queen Elizabeth. Off with her head. It's familiar territory for Hirst, and the combination of Ronan and Bier should be formidable. [ScreenDaily]

* Ashley Tisdale out, Cassi Thomson in for Left Behind, based on the popular Christian-themed book series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins, which were previously adapted for the screen with Kirk Cameron in the lead. This new version has a bigger budget and stars Nicolas Cage as Ray Steele and Chad Michael Murray as "Buck" Williams, two of the last remaining survivors in the aftermath of the Rapture. Thompson, who was really good on HBO's Big Love, will play Ray's daughter, Chloe Steele.

* Coming off writing gigs on Before Midnight and her directorial effort 2 Days in New York, Julie Delpy has just landed a major gig penning HBO Films' Cancer Vixen, which is being set up as a starring turn for Cate Blanchett. Blanchett is exec-producing the adaptation of Marisa Acocella Marchetto's memoir about her life as a big city cartoonist who is diagnosed with breast cancer just as she's engaged to be married. It's another potentially powerful role for Blanchett, who is earning Oscar attention for her performance in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine
