'Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance' Remake Lands Hany Abu-Assad as Director
It shouldn't be long before we see all of Park Chan-Wook's "Vengeance Trilogy" remade for American audiences. Rightly so, most of the attention has been focused on Spike Lee's version of Oldboy, due out later this year, but a remake of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance was announced awhile back with Brian Tucker (Broken City) providing the script. While there are no stars attached, or even any rumors suggesting who they might be, an interesting choice for director has been made.
Paradise Now director Hany Abu-Assad has been chosen to helm the remake, which follows a deaf-mute man who goes to desperate lengths to retrieve a kidney for his dying sister. It's as much of a twisty mind-screw as Oldboy, if not more so. It also plays with our sense of morality and justice, which, issues Abu-Assad tackled in Paradise Now, so this could be a perfect fit.
And as for the remake of Chan-Wook's Lady Vengeance? Nothing has been heard about it in awhile, but it seems like Charlize Theron is still on board.
