Another Oscar Contender Bites the Dust as 'Monuments Men' Moves to 2014

Well, Oscar prognosticators should have a easier go of it this year since so many of the season's favorites are dropping like flies. It began with Nicole Kidman's Grace of Monaco, which has been moved to an unspecified 2014 date as the director fights with Harvey Weinstein publicly. Then came Bennett Miller's Foxcatcher getting shoved to next year, and although Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street remains in the picture it was moved to Christmas Day. And now one of the few remaining major films has also exited the Oscar race.

George Clooney's Monuments Men has left its December 18th date for some time in the first quarter of 2014, and the reason is pretty simple: Clooney didn't have time to finish it. Even though a couple of trailers are already out there, significant visual effects work still needed to be completed. Clooney tells the LA Times....

"We just didn't have enough time. If any of the effects looked cheesy, the whole movie would look cheesy. We simply don't have enough people to work enough hours to finish it."

Clooney goes on to add that he never really looked at the film as an awards player anyway, so there's no disappointment in not taking home any golden statues. All of this shuffling around has to bode well for some of the films that may have been on the Oscar bubble, such as August: Osage County, Saving Mr. Banks, and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
