'District 9' Director Posts Amazing Concept Art for Unofficial 'Alien' Project

Well, this is bound to piss off the Prometheus haters out there and fill them with ideas of what might have been. District 9 and Elysium director Neill Blomkamp posted a bunch of photos to his Instagram of what LOOKS like some kind of abandoned project set in the world of Ridley Scott's Alien, and boy are they awesome.

Here's the thing, though: they aren't anywhere near official. They appear to be just some concept art for something Blomkamp was doing personally, maybe with the hope something would come of it. He even admits as much in a tweet....

“Ps this has nothing to do with the studio. I just feel like I might do something else instead. In which case why not show some work- They didn't really even know I was working on it ha.”

Regardless, these are pretty cool and don't seem to fit in as any kind of true sequel, or at least not a modern one. In one case you have what appears to be a younger version of Sigourney Weaver's Ripley, but you also have the return of Corporal Hicks sporting some serious acid burns. That would have been amazing all by itself to see how that played out. And apparently Blomkamp thinks Alien could have used his guiding force, too, stating...

“Woulda rocked. Was a mental stroll into the world Ridley Scott created."

Matt Damon to star in Neil Blomkamp's 'Elysium'

Last week we learned that District 9 director, Neil Blomkamp, was moving ahead with his much anticipated follow-up titled Elysium. The film is apparently another socially charged sci-fi flick with tons of action, only this one would be set on another planet.  We already know that Sharlto Copley is set to star, but he's got no chance of being THE star now, not with Matt Damon set to join up as well.

Deadline has the story, which says that Damon is currently in talks to be the lead guy. They also state that more big name casting is on the way, so it's looking like Blomkamp is putting all of his District 9 cred to good use by attracting A-list talent.

You'll be able to see Damon next on December 22nd in True Grit, directed by the Coen Brothers. You'll want to be there for that one, I promise.

Neil Blomkamp pushes ahead on Elysium, his follow-up to District 9

Briefly...

Deadline has learned that District 9 director Neil Blomkamp is moving ahead with plans for his next flick, a futuristic sci-fi film titled Elysium. Sharlto Copley(The A-Team) has already been confirmed to star, and similar to District 9 it will involve a lot of sociopolitical ideas along with explosive action. They're quick to point out that this is not a sequel to District 9, which went on to gross over $200M worldwide on a limited budget, also gaining one of the 10 Best Picture nominations at last year's Academy Awards.

Peter Jackson to Direct The Hobbit!

All the denials in the world don't amount to a hill of beans once the cash starts getting tossed around. Deadline is reporting that Peter Jackson is in talks with MGM, New Line, and Warner Brothers to direct two films based on JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit. The movies would be shot back-to-back in New Zealand. Jackson, who also co-wrote the film, will be taking over for Guillermo Del Toro who dropped out last month.

Jackson is apparently busy getting himself out of his other obligations, which has to include Tintin, the project he's been working on alongside Steven Spielberg.

I've stated before that I wanted to see these books from a fresh perspective, so the idea of Neil Blomkamp(District 9) or David Yates(Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) had the most appeal to me. However I can't deny that it's exciting to think we'll be getting two more LOTR films in Jackson's style.

More news on this is sure to follow, so stay tuned.
