One of my most anticipated films of the year has finally snagged a release date. True Grit, the Coen Brothers' remake of the 1969 John Wayne western, has snagged the highly prized Christmas Day opening. The film will star Jeff Bridges as lawman Rooster Cogburn, who is hired by a little girl to avenge her father's killer. Matt Damon will co-star as Cogburn's partner in the mission. The original film was popular enough that it spawned a sequel, titled Rooster Cogburn also starring Wayne. The less said about the made for TV movie threequel, the better.
This is a good deal for the Coens', as True Grit is already being talked about for next year's Oscar race. Being positioned on Christmas gives them high visibility for the upcoming awards season.
