Dr. Strange Film in the Works; Patrick Dempsey to Star?

Back in April we learned of Marvel Studios' plan to create a line of smaller budgeted superhero flicks starring some of the publisher's lower tier heroes: Power Pack; Luke Cage, etc. Now it's looking like the first film out of the gate will be the Sorcerer Supreme himself, Dr. Strange. Marvel has hired Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, writers of the upcoming Conan flick, to pen a script.

Rich Johnston over at Bleeding Cool adds a dash of speculation into the mix, stating that Patrick Dempsey(Can't Buy Me Love) could be in line for the role. Dempsey has stated his desire to play the part in the past, and is apparently already in Disney's good graces thanks to his performance in Enchanted.

Dr. Strange is a character I've always found interesting on the pages of any comic he appears in, although I have serious reservations about his viability as a successful movie character. His backstory isn't particularly interesting(former playboy doctor injures hands and turns to magic), his powers allow for him to do pretty much anything, and his personality is generally aloof. It's one reason why he's never had a successful comic book series of his own. Adding Dempsey to the mix will bring in viewers, but I think his mere presence makes the movie campy. It's already going to be a tough sell.
