Irony Alert: The Social Network unable to advertise on Facebook

In a sorta funny but if irony, David Fincher's upcoming Facebook origin story, The Social Network, won't be able to advertise on Facebook. As far as I can tell it has nothing to do with the film's....controversial take on the subject matter. Ok, maybe it does. Here's what Sony's SVP of Media Relations had to say:

"Facebook’s advertising guidelines don’t allow ads to reference the company unless Facebook has cooperated with the object of the ad. So, we won’t be advertising there given these parameters."

Key phrase: "unless Facebook has cooperated with the object of the ad".  I don't see that happening anytime soon.

Facebook is said to be utilized by up to 500 million people. While most of them will hear about The Social Network through other means, it still has to hurt to have a social networking flick unable to reach out through the world's most popular social network.
