The Sunday Drive: 7/4/10

Before I jump in to an even more abbreviated than usual Sunday Drive, I just want to take a moment and wish everyone a happy Independence Day! You've probably already stuffed your faces with a half dozen hot dogs, with more to follow, and I salute you for that. That's what the 4th is all about. Eating to the point of nausea with the people you love, celebrating our great country. Most of us have tomorrow off, which means there'll be plenty of time to go check out a flick, and if you do, these are the 3 to see.

I know, right? Shocking! The third leg of the Twilight franchise finally feels like it's building up to something important by ramping up the action and the tension between Bella, Edward, and Jacob.

2. Winter's Bone
A harrowing mystery set in the heart of the Ozarks, a mountainous terrain so isolated and foreign that it might as well be Jupiter. Jennifer Lawrence gives what I think is the performance of the year as Ree Dolly, a tough girl on the verge of womanhood, struggling to keep her family together after her father puts their house up for bond and skips town.

1. Toy Story 3
Do I really need to say anything else about Toy Story 3? It's Pixar, doing what I thought was impossible and topping themselves. The best film of the year.

DVD Pick of the Week:
Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief
The best action flick about the Greek gods has nothing to do with Clash of the Titans. Hurling the classic myths into the modern, technological age, director Chris Columbus does what he failed to do when he spearheaded the first two Harry Potter films, and that's keep the feeling of wonderment present at all times. Logan Lerman stars as Percy, an average kid who finds his world turned upside down when he discovers that his longlost dad is Poseidon, the Greek god of the oceans.
