3. True Grit
I know a few folks who'd like to challenge me to a duel for saying this, but Jeff Bridges is better than John Wayne in True Grit, the Coen Brothers' adaptation of the Charles Portis novel. Joined by Matt Damon and the remarkable debut of Hailee Steinfeld, Bridges spearheads an impeccably acted, masterfuly directed western adventure.
2. Black Swan
Intense and wildly dramatic, Darren Aronofsky's creepy ballet psycho horror is boosted by a transformative performance by Natalie Portman.
1. The Fighter
What are you people waiting for? There's only one movie worth braving the snow for, and that's The Fighter, the best sports drama of the year featuring an impeccable ensemble cast featuring epic turns by Christian Bale, Amy Adams, and Melissa Leo. Mark Wahlberg ain't bad, either.
DVD Pick of the Week: Easy A
I feel like I've been writing a lot about Easy A lately, what with it being pretty well represented in my Best of the Year lists. So I'll keep this simple: You want this movie. Not only does Emma Stone give one of the funniest performances of the year, but she's joined by a remarkable cast including the always perfect Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson. Fans of the classic teen angst comedies of John Hughes will recognize the formula immediately, and will no doubt be reminded of some of the filmmaker's most stand out female leads. Spread the word: Easy A is the best teen comedy in over a decade.
