The most recognizable version of the Pinocchio story is Walt Disney's 1940 version, but as typical of a Del Toro feature, this one will be much darker and take more from the source material...
Del Toro: "There has to be darkness in any fairy tale or children’s narrative work, something the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Anderson and Walt Disney understood. We tend to call something Disney-fied, but a lot of people forget how powerfully disturbing the best animated Disney movies are, including those kids being turned into donkeys in Pinocchio. What we’re trying to do is present a Pinocchio that is more faithful to the take that Colodi wrote. That is more surreal and slightly darker than what we’ve seen before."
I don't know how Del Toro has time for all the stuff he does. It seems like every other day there's some new idea he's been sitting on that gets set into motion. Although he does appear to be delegating more of the directorial duties to others, how long before the guy burns out?
