Hero of the Day: Donnie Yen
Donnie Yen has over 52 major film credits, but odds are you probably have no clue who he is. This is probably because he's an action star in Asia who hasn't really made the jump to Hollywood mainstream yet, but I'm thinking it's a good thing. This guy is amazing and I would hate to see him in some homogenized buddy cop crap (no offense Jackie Chan). If you are a fan of martial arts films I highly suggest you check out some of Yen's films, most notably being Ip Man. Not only is Yen an amazing martial artist who show less effort beating up 10 guys than I do tying my shoes, but he is actually a good actor as well...his films tend to be deeper than your average everyday kung-fu flick and he carries the emotion well. We are trying our damndest here at Punch Drunk Critics to get Mr. Yen on the phone for a few minutes so we can learn some more about his upcoming flicks Ip Man 2, and Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen. These movies have already been released overseas so you're likely to find them if you visit your local mall's karate cinema kiosk...I'm pretty sure every mall is required to have at least one....oh and not that I'm advocating piracy, most definitely you should hold out and experience these gems the way they were meant to be scene, on the big screen!
Without further adieu I present to you Donnie Yen kicking the asses of 10 or so martial arts masters at once. This is why Donnie Yen is my hero of the day.
