Mortal Kombat: The Digital Series cast announced

One of the most surprising news bits from last year was the release of a short promo film titled Mortal Kombat: Rebirth.  Directed by Kevin Tancharoen, the trailer took a real world, gritty approach to the violent world of Mortal Kombat, bringing back all the characters we were familiar with, such as Jax, Sonya Blade, and Scorpion. The trailer was a remarkable success, viewed over 10 million times on YouTube and sparking interest in taking Tancharoen's presentation and flipping it into a feature film.

Well that didn't happen exactly, but Warner Brothers took enough of a liking to it that they turned the concept into a digital anthology series to be distributed through Warner Brothers Digital Distribution.  Warner Premier has just revealed the initial casting for the project, currently shooting in Vancouver...

Jeri Ryan(Star Trek: Voyager) will reprise her role as Sonya Blade; Michael Jai White(Black Dynamite) as Major "Jax" Briggs; and Darren Shahlavi as Kano. The first installments of Mortal Kombat will be available online in the Spring, around the time of the latest video game releases on April 19th.

Like most people, the Mortal Kombat: Rebirth trailer knocked my socks off last year. It got me excited for a world that frankly I had been ignoring for years. I never really dug the video games, and the movies were awful.  I'll be keeping an eye out for these episodes as soon as they debut.  If you never had a chance to check out the video that set all this into motion, you can find it below!
