Soapdish, The Bodguard remakes in the works.
Two marginal 90s flicks that have no business being on anybody's radar are getting the remake treatment. Where's the **#$&&$% House Party remake????
Back in 1992 I remember there being one movie that every female in the Hopson family brood unanimously loving: The Bodyguard. Starring Kevin Costner as a Secret Service agent brought on to protect a famous singer(Whitney Houston pre-picking turds out of Bobby Brown's ass. That's love.) who has been threatened by a stalker. Maybe it was a wave of jungle fever sweeping not only the Hopson household but the world, but The Bodyguard went on to gross over $400M. Crazy. Well, Warner Brothers has eyes on capturing that magic again as Deadline reports a remake is already in the planning stages. Blah.
The script will be written by Jeremiah Friedman and Nick Palmer, and will bring the story into a more modern age. The plot will be essentially the same, only the bodyguard now "will be a former Iraq war veteran who gets the job protecting the star as his first gig after leaving the Army. He discovers that the world of Twitter, Google Maps and TMZ has made access to celebrities easier than ever, making the job more difficult than ever."
Warner Brothers hopes to cast a young, female pop star with worldwide appeal for the Whitney Houston role. Lady Gaga, anyone? Nah, one of the dynamics that made The Bodyguard so popular was the interracial relationship at the center of it. Rihanna, maybe?
Paramount Pictures has apparently decided to prove that no studio has a monopoly on bad ideas, as they've hired Ben Schwartz(Robot Chicken) to pen the script for a remake of Soapdish. Don't remember it? Other than the lively cast of the 1991 flick there's really no reason to. Following the behind-the-scenes shenanigans at a network soap opera, the film starred Robert Downey Jr., Whoopi Goldberg, Kevin Kline, Sally Field, Elisabeth Shue and Carrie Fisher and still managed to not be the least bit funny.
Seriously, anybody excited over either of these?
