Hailee Steinfeld, Jennifer Lawrence up for lead in The Hunger Games
Hailee Steinfeld and Jennifer Lawrence are both riding waves of popularity following the Oscars. Lawrence has followed up her star making turn in Winter's Bone with a major role in X-men: First Class. Steinfeld has seen her name attached to a number of potentials as well. They're Hollywood's new 'It' girls. What neither has right now is a big franchise to call their own, but that could be about to change.
Variety reports that the two nominated actresses are the frontrunners for the lead in The Hunger Games, based on Suzanne Collins' smash young adult series. Abigail Breslin(Little Miss Sunshine) is also a contender. All three are vying for the role of Katniss, who enters a fierce competion against other teens in order to save her starving community.
The deciding factor is going to boil down to whether director Gary Ross wants his lead to be older or more reflective of the book. The desired age range is reportedly 15 to 20. Lawrence is the oldest, which could be a problem considering the expectation of future sequels. Steinfeld would seem to be the best fit, not only due to her age, but she was the breakout star in a film a lot of people saw and connected with. However at this point Lawrence, who has already read for the part, has reportedly impressed the studio the most.
Steinfeld admitted at the Oscars that she's already met with Ross about the film, but what do you all think? I've yet to read The Hunger Games so I cant really choose. Who do want to see win the role?
