Jodie Foster looking to direct a sci-fi film next?

Jodie Foster has only directed three feature films in her illustrious career, but without a doubt none have received the type of buzz her latest, The Beaver, is getting. A lot of that has to do with it's star, Mel Gibson, and the subject matter which seems like it was geared specifically for the troubled actor. So far her movies have stayed fairly close to family friendly subject matter, but for her next directorial effort Foster is looking to go a little bit further. Like outer space further.  She recently told the LA Times...

Foster: “There’s a family element to it, but it’s much more a genre movie,” Foster said in an interview after “The Beaver” premiere in Austin, Texas.  “I’d like to do that ’cause that’s a world I live in as an actor but I’ve never really gone to as a director.  I’d still have to have all the other stuff in a film. It can’t just be, ‘There’s a bad guy, there’s a monster.’ It has to have all the other stuff too.”

As Foster herself noted, she's done sci-fi before but only as an actress, most notably in 1997's Contact. A movie I absolutely love, by the way, and featuring one of the better Matthew McConaughey performances of his career. She'll be venturing into that genre again as part of Neill Blomkamp's District 9 follow-up, Elysium
