Screen Gems to adapt Devil May Cry video game for the big screen

I have a handful of friends who swear by Devil May Cry, the action heavy video game series featuring enigmatic demonslayer, Dante. Since the Capcom developed game debuted in 2001, the franchise has sold over 10 million copies and spawned comic books and appearances in other video games. Could a movie be far behind? Obviously not.

Screen Gems has bought the rights to adapt Devil May Cry for the big screen, hiring Kyle Ward to pen the script. This is clearly a bid for a potential franchise, and with the success seen with Resident Evil its not far fetched to assume it could happen again. Devil May Cry was originally conceived as a Resident Evil spinoff.

I've never been able to wrap my brain around Devil May Cry. People love it and Dante is crazy popular here and abroad. It's just another hack 'n slash game to me, but I'll be curious to see how a live action take could work.

Thanks to Variety for info on this story.
