One of the things I did most about James Marsh is that it's hard to get a bead on what he'll do next.
The King
, which featured the most eye-popping performance I've seen yet by Gael Garcia Bernal as a troubled(and very dangerous) military vet, was a dark and poetic character study. The film that really drew people's attention was his fantastic 2008 documentary,
Man on Wire, but he did equally strong work in the Brit crime trilogy,
Red Riding
. Marsh recently completed his latest doc, Project Nim, about the 1970s experiment to teach a chimp how to act human. He's shopping it around now, but in the process also trying putting the pieces together for his next film, a thriller about an IRA agent turned informant.
The film doesn't have a title yet, but Marsh recently told
Vulture that casting has already gone through some changes. At one time he had Rebecca Hall(
Please Give
) and Guy Pearce(
The Road
) as the leads, but now he'll run with my favorite actor, Clive Owen, and Andrea Riseborough(
Never Let Me Go
). Shooting is set to begin in Dublin in May. Hopefully by then it'll have a proper title.
