Shakespeare has never been more lame, or Radiohead sounded more wack. Roland Emmerich takes a breather from hashing out end of the world scenarios for his Shakespeare conspiracy flick, Anonymous. The film is a political thriller mostly, surrounding the succession of Queen Elizabeth, but central to the story is a long held question of whether or not William Shakespeare ever wrote the plays he's been credited for. The cast is simply out of this world, featuring Rhys Ifans, Vanessa Redgrave, David Thewlis, Rafe Spall, and Joely Richardson. The trailer doesn't really do much for me, and it's not because Emmerich is the director whose work I despise more than others, it just looks like a bloated period piece trying to masquerade as something else. Personally, I'd rather Emmerich stick to what he knows best, earthquakes and blizzards.Check out the trailer below, which has been getting yanked off of sites pretty quickly. So you might want to watch it now.
The Shakespeare debate is one I've always found to be very intriguing, with popular current opinion being that nobleman Edward de Vere authored the most renowned works. Not a lot of people even know this debate exists, so it's good to see it brought to the limelight. Whether or not it's a successful presentation remains to be seen. Anonymous is currently slated for a September 30th release.
