M. Night Shymalan deservedly got trashed left and right after last year's debacle, The Last Airbender. The film made a ton of loot, but also validated a lot of people's opinions that the guy is a complete joke as a filmmaker. I don't agree with that necessarily, and was happy to see that Shyamalan jumped into other stuff without skipping a beat. In October he began talking about a sci-fi film he was preparing, titled One Thousand A.E. It would star Jaden Smith and would be produced by Will Smith's Overbrook Entertainment. Now comes word via a press release from Sony Pictures that the film is now confirmed, but not only will it star Jaden, but daddy Fresh Prince will be as well.
Sony says that the film is currently untitled, but I expect the One Thousand A.E. name will probably stick around. When last we heard anything about it, the storyline was kept completely under wraps. Now we know it takes place in the distant future, where an estranged father and son must navigate an abandoned, frightening planet. Gary Whitta(The Book of Eli
Hey, he's Will Smith. The guy doesn't make movies that tank....for the most part. He's been especially successful in the sci-fi genre, with his last three films of the type earning nearly $600M total. He's currently bogged down in the middle of another one, the disastrous Men in Black III. Will and Jaden last teamed together in 2006's The Pursuit of Happyness
The question is whether or not Smith's box office might can change popular opinion of Shyamalan. Doubtful, because even though Shymalan's movies have been panned, they still earn a pretty penny. The Last Airbender sucked so hard it only earned $320M worldwide. So he's taking all of our insults and jokes about him, wiping his butt with them, and then going back to counting his money.
