The Punch Drunk Interview: James Wan & Leigh Whannell talk 'Insidious'

Some might look at the weekend box office success of Insidious($13.5M) with shock, but if you've followed the careers of director James Wan and his long time friend, writer(and occasional star) Leigh Whannell, then it shouldn't be that much of a surprise. The two rose from humble beginnings to create Saw, one of the most memorable horror franchises in history, turning what was initially a low budget, low expectations film into a phenomenon earning nearly $900M worldwide. Whannel would go on to script the next two Saw films, while Wan moved on to other projects. The two would reunite again for the under appreciated horror film, Dead Silence.

Not wanting to be labeled as just "The Saw Guys", Insidious is a bit of a departure for them. Where Saw is physically blunt and violent, Insidious is a mental torture test, similar to some of the great psycho horrors of the 1980s, specifically Poltergeist. Me and Kyle Osborne of Entertainment Or Die had a chance to sit down with Wan and Whannell for a revealing interview about the making of Insidious, their thoughts on the horror industry as a whole, and what projects they have coming up. You can check out that audio below, followed by a clip from Insidious!

I want to thank Kyle Osborne for joining me on this extremely fun interview. Be sure to check out his site, Entertainment Or Die, for celebrity gossip, movie news, and event listings in your area!
