Just a couple of months ago we learned that GK Films had secured the rights to the once awesome Tomb Raider franchise, with plans for a big screen reboot to hit theaters some time in 2013. That meant they had to get on the ball pretty quickly, and now Deadline reports they've taken the first big step by hiring Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus to script Lara Croft's big comeback. The duo are arguably the hottest duo in Hollywood when it comes to big adventure flicks, having scripted both Iron Man and Jon Favreau's Cowboys & Aliens. Both big, fantastic movies, but their best is without a doubt Children of Men. Yep, they co-wrote that too.
The big question remains who will play the iconic female adventurer, Lara Croft? Angelina Jolie personified the heroine in both blockbuster movies in 2001 and 2003, but who could possibly follow in her footsteps now? The only actresses who have really taken hold of the action reins are Milla Jojovich(Resident Evil) and Kate Beckinsale(Underworld), but neither is a likely choice here. You can count out Jennifer Garner, too. GK will no doubt want to start over with a fresh face who can shock us with her physicality, the way Jolie did.
My vote went to Emily Browning as a shock choice the last time I wrote about Tomb Raider, but I'm now not so sure about that. Maybe Olivia Wilde could be a dark horse in this race? This might be the toughest role to cast right now because it calls for such a specific type of actress. I'll be very curious to see what happens next. Who do you think could play Lara Croft in a new Tomb Raider flick?
