Trailer Time: Martha Marcy May Marlene, starring Elizabeth Olson and John Hawkes

What the heck happened to John Hawkes!!? This can't be the same twitchy guy from Identity and Eastbound and Down, can it? If Winter's Bone marked a radical shift towards darker roles for the actor, Martha Marcy May Marlene solidifies him as one of the most intense actors we've got.

The film premiered at Sundance where first-time director Sean Durkin took home the Director Award, but most of the buzz has surrounded star Elizabeth Olsen, yes the younger sister of Mary-Kate and Ashley. She plays Martha, young woman who flees from a cult and tries to slowly work through living a normal life again with her family. Only the memories of her time there, under the thrall of the cult's charismatic leader, Patrick(Hawkes), has done more damage to her psyche than anyone realized.

This is a fantastic trailer, beatifully shot with a perfectly fitting, haunting score. Each scene seems to drift into the next, the same way Martha's world slips from reality to painful memory. I can't wait to see this when Fox Searchlight cranks it out on October 7th. Check out the trailer below!

Martha Marcy May Marlene stars Elizabeth Olson, John Hawkes, Sarah Paulson, Hugh Dancy, and Brady Corbett.
