Tops at the Box Office: Green Lantern's light goes dark; Super 8 holds strong

1. Green Lantern- $52.7M
Green Lantern came out of the gate with a massive marketing campaign by Warner Brothers, and a production budget somewhere upwards of $200-300M. And yet it's opening was less than X-men: First Class and Thor, the other two big superhero movies we've seen so far this summer. That isn't good, and when you account for the 3D ticket pricing it looks even worse. So what does all this mean? Is this a referendum on comic book movies in general? Doubtful. More likely it's a knock against the cheesy look of the film, and that Green Lantern isn't consider a top flight hero by most folks. The interesting thing is that Ryan Reynolds, who has now been in three comic book movies already(Blade: Trinity, X-men Origins: Wolverine), still has a couple of them coming up fairly soon(RIPD, Deadpool).
2. Super 8- $21.2M/$72.8M
Besting the trend of most other sci-fi monster flicks, JJ Abrams' Super 8 held strong and only slipped around 40% from last week. At the rate it's going I expect Super 8 to stick around for awhile and probably end up earning more than Green Lantern in the end.

3.  Mr. Popper's Penguins- $18.2M
Can we just go ahead and admit that Jim Carrey's star has fallen back down to earth? His latest, Mr. Popper's Penguins, got off to a lukewarm start and probably isn't going to be sticking around for very long. Even by his recent lackluster standards this is a weak open, and he hasn't had a legit starring hit since 2003(Bruce Almighty).
4. X-men: First Class- $11.5M/$120M
Continues to rank as the lowest grossing of all the X-men flicks, but has earned a pretty hefty $160M overseas, so it isn't all bad.
5. The Hangover part II- $9.63M/$233M
6. Kung Fu Panda 2- $8.7M/$143M
7. Bridesmaids- $7.49M/$137M
8. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides- $6.24M/$220M
9. Midnight in Paris- $5.24M/$21.8M
Only dipped 10% from last week as it expands into more theaters. Do yourself a favor and check it out.
10. Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer-  $2.24M/$11.2M
