Vince Vaughn's new comedy buddy, Jason Bateman, joins him for Insane Laws

Sometimes I wonder if Vince Vaughn could ever really carry a film by himself. He's always paired up with somebody else to take off half the comedy burden. Sometimes it's Owen Wilson. Last time it was Kevin James. In Couples Retreat he had a whole army of folks to give him a hand up. The next guy to play Vaughn's comic tag team partner? Jason Bateman, who could use a career freshening up as well.

The two are set to star in the comedy, Insane Laws, the directorial debut of Jeremy Garelick. Garelick worked with Vaughn as writer of The Break-Up, not a particular favorite of mine but one of Vaughn's stronger performances. Every female I've ever known loves that movie, though, so somebody must've done something that connected.

Deadline describes the plot as two best friends(Vaughn and Bateman) who have grown up together, through college and fatherhood. Unbeknownst to them, their two kids have been falling in love. The bonds of friendship are put to the test when Vaughn's daughter gets pregnant by Bateman's son.

Ugh. I'll be curious to see the path this one takes. The Break-Up was a film that was presented as a pretty straight forward comedy, but there were some pretty harsh relationship bits in there. Vaughn's most recent effort, The Dilemma, was similar in that it paired him up with Kevin James for what looked like a typical buddy comedy but was actually pretty dark.

Bateman will be seen next in Horrible Bosses, which features The Break-Up's Jennifer Aniston, as well as Jason Sudeikis, and Colin Farrell. He'll then be rendered invisible standing next to Ryan Reynolds in the body switching comedy, The Change-Up.
